My dear friends and colleagues,Seven months ago the Horniman Museum has opened its exhibition Utsavam – Music from India. Thousands of visitors have seen the exhibition, nearly all national dailies published extremely positive articles and the BBC broadcasted several programmes. Following the huge interest in our last tour and responding to the demand of friends and colleagues I have decided to invite for another special guided tour through the exhibition. On Sunday 21 September the Museum hosts the Kala Chetana Kathakali Company with special guests (dancers and musicians!) from Kerala. So what better day to do a special tour like this! Therefore I’d like to invite you and your family to visit the Utsavam concert and join me and possibly Margaret Birley – the co-curator – for a special exhibition tour on the 21 September starting at 4.15pm directly after the Kathakali performance at the exhibition entrance. Please note that the exhibition closes on 2 November this year, so this might be the last chance to attend a guided exhibition tour. See the line-up details below, read the press reports and watch the programmes about the exhibition on my new website www.rolfkillius.com produced by Nigel Muris from Printstream. You might also be interested to hear that I have just started working on two exciting new projects, which in a way follow the path cleared by the Horniman’s Utsavam exhibition:An online sound project of the British Library Sound Archive in collaboration with the Horniman Museum, where we will select 100 (!) music examples from my recording trips to India starting in 1995. All sound examples will be presented on the official British Library website and can be downloaded by everybody in mp3 quality. The other project was initiated by the London Sitar Ensemble, Sutton Sabrang and the Museum of Croydon. They asked my to co-curate an exhibition called “Indian Strings and Dances”, which will feature string instruments, dance costumes, and a vast range of short films with the focus on how Indian music and dance is performed in the UK. The exhibition will open on April 2009 (further details also on www.rolfkillius.com)So hopefully we meet on Sunday, 21 September at the Horniman Museum for the Kathakali performance and special tour (10 min by rail from London Bridge to Forest Hill; walk up the hill in 5 min to the Horniman Museum at 100 London Road). With the best wishesRolfUtsavam programmeKala Chethana Kathakali
