Adult literacy drive yields results at Pamohi village

GUWAHATI, Sept 10 – To shape the future of the young, a different approach has been adopted at a nondescript locality on the outskirts of the capital city.

At this village called Pamohi close to the Deepor Beel, which is a wetland famed for its diverse flora and fauna and near to the Assam-Meghalaya border, the effort has been made to illuminate the minds of the elders with the light of knowledge so that they realise the importance of education for their children.

The attempt has been made in view of the fact that the elders involve children in activities that meet the needs of the family. The village is mainly dominated by poverty-stricken tribal people, and compelled by circumstances, the children too have to contribute their labour to keep the home fires burning.

In the backdrop of such conditions, Parijat Academy, a school providing free education to the underprivileged children, has launched an adult literacy programme which is continuing on its premises for the illiterate women.

Uttam Teron, founder of the school, said that the programme is targeted at the womenfolk because they have the power to make the change.

“If the women realise the importance of education, they will send the children to school,” said Uttam.

The change is already perceptible in the area where the source of income is wood cutting, homemade rice beer, cultivation, etc. Some of the women have become capable of reading newspapers, while others have acquired the ability to put their signature.

The time for the one-hour class is fixed according to the convenience of the learners.

What is most encouraging for the authorities of Parijat Academy is that two women have successfully opened their bank accounts after enrolling themselves in the adult literacy centre.

Parijat Academy has opened another adult literacy centre at Garbangha, with support from Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters. The response is stated to be quite positive and more than 40 women have enrolled themselves.
