Law School University at Guwahati
Sir, – It is a matter of appreciation that during the last few years several Law School Universities have been set up in the country. The establishment of National Law School Universities at Bangalore (Karnataka), Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Raipur (Chatisgarh), Gandhinagar (Gujarat), Kochi (Kerala), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), Patna (Bihar), Kolkata (West Bengal), Patiala (Punjab) and New Delhi etc. have given a new thrust in the sphere of legal education in our country. The National Law School Universities (NLSU) are considered to be a new breed of National Institutes like IIT, IIM, IIIT, NIT, IISc, AIIMS and CU (Central Universities). These new Law School Universities have greatly contributed in their own ways towards promoting excellence in legal education and research by attracting some of the brightest students to legal education.
The introduction of 5-year Integrated BA, LLB Course in the Law School Universities have given new impetus to students for pursuing legal education right after the completion of the 10+2 pattern of schooling. It is seen that the 5-year Integrated BA LLB courses of the Law Schools have, greatly succeeded in attracting the meritorious students to study Law as their choice career option. In fact the study of Law has received better attention among Higher Secondary school leavers who are aspiring to build up their careers in legal profession as lawyers, Judicial officers, Corporate Law Officers, Legal consultants, Dispute Arbitrator, Legal Analysts, Legal researcher and Human Rights promoters.
It is a matter of regret that Assam is yet to establish a National Law School University for the benefits of the students of Assam in particular and North Eastern States in general. In the absence of a high profile Law School in the State, a large number of bright students of Assam are moving out of the State for 5-year BA LLB (Hons) programme to Bangalore, Hyderabad, Bhopal, Jodhpur, New Delhi etc.
Now we are happy to learn that the Centre is keen to promote the establishment of a National Law School University in the North Eastern Region, especially in Assam and the Centre is reported to have asked the State Government to take initiative for its earlymaterialisation. Union Law Minister H R Bharadwaj is reported to have asked the State Government to find a suitable plot of land for the proposed Law School University Project. The Prime Minister’s recent endorsement for a Law School in the State has highlighted the matter.
The Assam Chief Minister who is seen to be very serious about the needs of the stream specific professional education in the State should now take up the matter with the Centre for early establishment of the much needed Law School University at Guwahati which is considered to be the most preferred location for a Law School University in the N E Region.
–Yours etc., DR M C BHUYAN, Jalukbari, Guwahati.
