Reference the discussion on dredging the Kosi channel, may I point outthat the annual sediment load of Kosi is estimated at 115 MILLIONcubic metres. Even at some point upstream where the sediment could beless, the proponents of dredging might like to calculate HOW MANY 7cum vehicle loads that would take, propose WHERE the dredged materialwould be dumped, check WHETHER the State of Bihar can muster that manyvehicles to move out the dredged material EVERY YEAR, and checkWHETHER there will be road space remaining for other vehicles notengaged in transporting the dredged material. It is simply not practical !------------------------------- Estimated at 115 MILLION:Instead of Estimating--measure. Simple Sedimentation. How much Solids settle in 1 CuMtre of flowout at bottom of Nepal. And measure flowout(fairly accurately with simple surface flowmeters)Some point upstream where the sediment could be less:It will be maximum where Kosi leaves the mountainsProponents of dredging might :As I am a rabid one- I mentally figured out that Trucks 7m3 or 120m3 have to be amphibious ones if at all. The digging and stacking will need to be done by long boom floating cranes. Maybe at the driest pre-rains winter- you use scrapers and dumpers to stack the dug-up overburden neatly as stacks in fishbone formation-- please see attachment.

WHERE the dredged material
Just very next

State of Bihar can muster
Isn't this a nation's shame /challenge-why poor Shramjivi- Express-Riding Biharis' only ?
If Bihar was granted zillions to make Embankments under National Embankment Policy since 50's-- the NATION should say "Sorry we led you up the garden Path- we are here now to solve Your woes with Superior new Technology"It is simply not practical
Defeat so soon for a near -super-power?

What I suggest is this:

Everybody Brushes up 1st year Engineering College hydraulics-- mainly Chezy's formula
Make an analogue circuit -Height difference from Nepal foothills to Ganga=V0 ( not changeable) volts;Built-up sils in 50 years of National Embankments = added N1 Ohms; Meandering flow patterns resulting added N2 Ohms. So flowout rate has come down to Vo/(N1+N2)
Only way to engineer a rapid flow out is to reduce N1 and N2
And the only way to stop trapped local flooding rainfall is to -- Destroy the National Embankments

It is simply not practical !However, dredging at local levels may be effective for limited periodsof time because the river is not one that can be 'controlled' or'trained'. But why are we talking about dredging when the cause ofthe problem is the embankments themselves?Maj Gen S.G.Vombatkere (Retd)__._,_.___
