            Events Planned for Saffron Revolution Anniversary


            If You Couldn't Host an Event, Can You Send An Email and Watch a Video Today? 
           

      Thank you to all 240 participants who are holding events in the U.S. and around the world to commemorate the Saffron Revolution.  If you were not able to hold an event, there is another way that you can help -- from your computer.

      1) Please Sign this Petition to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and tell your friends, family, and co-workers to sign it as well.  The petition asks Ban Ki-moon to make freeing Burma's 2,130 political prisoners a top priority. Yesterday the regime released 9,000 prisoners; however, only 7 were political prisoners. The UN must not fall for the regime's tricks. 
      2) After you are done emailing the petition, you can watch a powerful new on-line  video our office has produced -- a short 13-minute video of U Gawsita, one of the monks who helped lead the Saffron Revolution. He tells the story of why they started protests and he speaks of when the crackdown began. We have put it up on Youtube in 2 parts here. If you can, please show it to others, post it on facebook, post on your blog, and/or host a screening.

      Tomorrow marks the anniversary of when government troops began their brutal crackdown against Buddhist monks who had been leading public protests and marches through the streets of cities across Burma. Many of us remember the hope of seeing the escalation of these protests and were compelled to support this mass uprising through our own actions. Many people all over the world held demonstrations, marches, wrote letters, etc. in support of the monks. 

      The crackdown was horrific, leaving hundreds dead and thousands imprisoned or missing.  
      Thank you for all of your help over the last year -- we have achieved many victories -- and please continue to stand with us.  We believe that the best way to honor the monks is to continue the struggle that they were marching for.
