Bertil Lintner to launch Subir Bhaumik's book at Guwahati Press Club

Guwahati: One of Asia's best known investigative journalist Bertil Lintner will be in Guwahati to launch Subir Bhaumik's latest book "Troubled Periphery: Crisis of India's North-east" . The book will be launched at the Guwahati Press Club on 15th December at 11.30 PM. This will be followed by a panel discussion joined by leading journalists, academics and activists. The programme will be hosted by Panos South Asia and the Guwahati Press Club .

Bertil Lintner is a legend in reporting Asia. In 1986, Lintner undertook what none has done before -- a 2200-kms trek through North Burma's insurgent held areas to report the long civil war in that country. He visited the NSCN and the ULFA bases in Burma's Sagaing Division, then visited the bases of the Kachin Independence Army, those of the now-defunct Burmese Communist Party and all other rebel groups active in the area. The journey took him 18 months, during which wife and photographer, Hseng Noung ( from Burma's Shan state) delivered a girl child. That audacious journey led to Bertil's fascinating book " Land of Jade : Journey through Insurgent Burma". Having reported for the Far eastern Economic Review ( now a monthly) for three decades, Bertil Lintner is now a senior analyst with the Jane Defence Weekly and Jane Intelligence Review .

Since 1995 he has also been the East Asiacorrespondent for the Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet, and from 1995 to 2003 the Southeast Asiacorrespondent for Politiken of Denmark.  He is author of several other books  like  BURMA IN REVOLT , BLOOD BROTHERS: CRIME,BUSINESS AND POLITICS IN ASIA and  GREAT LEADER, DEAR LEADER: DEMYSTIFYING NORTH KOREAUNDER THE KIM CLAN, which outlines the regime’s ideology and how the Kim Clan exercises power. His most recent book is MERCHANTS OF MADNESS: THE METHEMPHETAMINE EXPLOSION IN THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE (2009, with Michael Black.)

Subir Bhaumik, a long standing friend of Bertil Lintner and also known for his long journeys to rebel bases across the borders ,  is BBC' bureau chief for East and Northeast India. He has covered the Northeast for 30 years and regularly writes for several Asomiya , English and Bengali newspapers in the region. The "Troubled Periphery: Crisis of India's Northeast", published by Sage. is his second book. The first one, "Insurgent Crossfire" , details how post-colonial nation-states in South Asiahave reciprocally backed insurgencies and rebellions against each other . Bhaumik was a Queen Elizabeth Fellow at OxfordUniversity(1989-90) and a Eurasian Fellow at FrankfurtUniversity(2009) .

Bertil Lintner will be in Northeast Indiaafter twenty-three years. " The last time it was a clandestine visit and all our movements were done in great secrecy. This time, the Indian government has given me all the required permits and visa to visit the entire region," Lintner says, as he recollects the beginning of that great trek that resulted in the "Landof Jade."
