Educated unemployed rural youths of Patidarang set shining example
 Correspondent

GORESWAR, Feb 1 – Rural educated unemployed youths of Pubpar
Jatiyabhangara village in Patidarrang mouza under Bihdia Jajikona Block
have started cultivating mustard in 40 bighas of land, Masur dal in 22
bighas and Dhania (corriander) in 30 bighas land.

A total of 92
bighas of land were sowed in the month of November by the youths namely
Galmahmud Ali, Mojamil Hoque, Arzed Ali, Fiznur Ali, Mojibur Rahman,
Mridual Ali, Kalam Ali, Riaz Ali, Taslim Ali, Mahibulla Ali, Ratul Ali
and Sakhat Ali of the village. As many as six members are graduate and
rest six are matriculate. They have already started cultivating
mustard, masur (lentil) and coriander covering a plot measuring 92
bighas of agriculture land belonging to their respective families as
well as the neighbours. The land owners allowed the youths to cultivate
the said rabi crops in their agriculture land.

For the occasion,
the Nabarong self-help-group (SHG) was formed by the youths in August,
2007, at Pub-Parjatiya bhangra village with Golmahmud Ali (graduate)
and Mozamil Hoque as president and secretary.

The primary,
objective of their endeavour is to provide gainful employment for
themselves during the lean agricultural season. Besides, the
forthcoming paddy season would be utilised by them, Mojamil told this
correspondent.

The secondary objective is the creation of
economic infrastructure and community assets for sustained employment
and development in their backward region.

The members of the
Nabarong SHG did not borrow money from any person or other’s savings to
spend in their cultivation purpose. They collected Rs 25 per week from
each member since the formation of the SHG. They spent a total amount
Rs 82,000 in tractor, ploughing, procurement of seeds, manure,
pesticides, watering etc. They have been cultivating these 92 bighas
with their own experience and advice of the local VIEWS, Paresh Chandra
Deka from time to time. A total of 16 quintals of manure have been used.

The
concerned agriculture staff including Pabitra Kumar Deka, ADO, Loch
circle under Muktapur sub-division visited the farm recently.
Thereafter discussion was held in front of the rest house of the
Nabarong (SHG) located in the agriculture fields near the farm wherein
the SHG members, agriculture office staff. Kanthi Saikia, journalist,
Babu Rabha, journalist Kishore Bhatta, ex-MLA candidate, Dr Dhrubajyoti
Sarma, Soneswar Boro, an ideal farmers, Pranjal Kalita, an ideal
farmer, DS Deka and Paresh Deka VLEWS participated in the discussion.
All the participants highly recited and encourage the memers of the
said SHG for their steps in this regard. They expect that SHG activists
would surely be able to motivate other youths and farmers of
Patidarrang mouza in Kamrup district (R).

It may be noted that
the SHG members failed to manage a deep shallow filter tubewell for
watering their field. They are irrigating the field by 6 HP rented
water pump. They also used rented tractor for ploughing their estimated
agriculture land due to lack of proper facilities which should have
been provided by the State Agriculture Department on the other hand,
the branch manager of the Asom Gramin Bikash Bank, Muktapur branch,
Ajoy Barpatra Gohain is not eager to sanction loan against their farm
to ameliorate the condition of the poor activist of the SHG. Even the
branch manager has no time to visit the SHG’s farm despite reiterated
appeals made to him. According to them, agro products can be increased
with effective steps by agriculture department falling under Rangiya
subdivision agriculture office including the financial help like KCC
loan from the concerned bank of the locality. To add their woes, they
are further buying seeds, fertilizers and pesticides at high rates from
the open market due to absence of the government’s PDS fertilizers
godown in rural areas.
