New agri college to be named after Sarat Sinha
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Feb 7 – The new agriculture college to be established by the
State Government near Chapar in Dhubri district will be named after former Chief
Minister Sarat Chandra Sinha. This was disclosed by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi
while laying the foundation stone of the college at Rangamati near Chapar today.
The Government is planning to earmark an amount of Rs 10 crore for the college
in the budget for the next financial year.
Speaking on the occasion, Gogoi said that the college would benefit the people
of lower Assam districts, particularly those dependent on agriculture. He said
that in recent years, the Government has initiated a series of steps to give a
boost to agriculture and allied sectors. He said that tractors and power tillers
have been provided to the farmers as a part of mechanization of agriculture..
Gogoi hoped that the new schemes taken up by the Government would improve
production and improve the income of the farmers, which, in turn, would improve
the rural economy of the State. He said that the self help group movement also
gave a big boost to the rural economy of Assam.
The Chief Minister asserted that development of the poorer sections of the
society is the main goal of the Central and State Governments and said that
stress has been given on education, health and sanitation etc. He said that the
Centre’s schemes like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and the
Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme etc were aimed at overall development
of the rural areas.
The function was also attended by Agriculture Minister Pramila Rani Brahma,
Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain and
others, said official sources.
