Sabha must promote diverse cultures: Mamoni
 Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Feb 9 - Asserting that the Asam Sahitya Sabha (ASS) needs to
improve its image amongst the masses of the country, Jnanpeeth awardee
Dr Indira (Mamoni Raisam) Goswami today said that the apex literary
body of the State should put in a rejuvenated effort to promote further
the diverse cultures of the State. Goswami, while speaking during the
foundation stone laying ceremony of Asom Cultural University in
Chachal, said, "I mostly stay outside the State and people there hardly
know about the Sabha. The aspects that find ear outside the State are
not which we can take pride in."

"The Sabha is not about a
handful of people and so people from all walks of life should come
forward to strengthen the apex literary body," the noted writer said.

"The
concept of setting up the university is really commendable and it is
biggest achievement of Sabha till date. I hope the university would go
a long way in promoting the real and undiscovered aspects of our
culture," she added.

Dr Goswami also pointed out the need for
laying special stress on the history of lower Assam and translation
works both by the Sabha and the State Government.

Music
maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika, who was supposed to lay the foundation
stone of the university, could not make it on health ground.

ASS president Kanak Sen Deka read out Hazarika's written speech.

Earlier,
speaking on the occasion, State Education Minister Gautam Bora said
that the university would emerge as a platform, which will showcase
Assamese culture in the global milieu.

"Efforts should be made
by the Sabha to draw young people and the university would play a
pivotal role in ensuring the same. It is only when we would be able to
drive the interest of the young minds towards the uniqueness of our
culture, then we would consider ourselves successful.

Besides, research works would also get due importance under the university," Bora asserted.

"The State Government would leave no stone turned to facilitate setting up of the university," he said.

ASS
president Kanak Sen Deka, while speaking on the occasion, thanked VK
Pipersenia, Principal Secretary, State Revenue department for coming up
with the idea of setting up a cultural university in the State.

A host of noted personalities and Sabha members were also present on the occasion.
