Deka
I checked with some scholars in Assam.
The Buragoahin and Borghains came with Sukapha. These two posts are appointed from the respective families. Thus all Buragohains and Borgohains are blood related. That is to say, a Buragohain cannot marry another Buragohain. Same is true of the Borgohains. The Barpatrogohain title was created later during the Ahom rule in Assam. Thus both Buragohain and Borgohains have seminar on Bonxawolis. This is however a new culture. I think everybody wants to know their roots. It is believed that when Sukapha came in 1228, only the king and his generals and may be some top ranking individuals came with their families. Most others, came on single status. They married local Assamese girls. As a result within one generation, Assamese became their mother tongue.
Please also note that these titles are Assamese titles. Originally these titles had some different Tai names. At one time I was asking the question, wherefrom the title Gohain came from. Assamese scholars have no answer. My theory is that the Gohain title was derived from original Assamese word Goxain which itself was derived from Sanskrit Goswami, I believe.

> I believe a simple explanation to your question is that a Buragohain is always appointed by the king from the Buragahian clan. I believe there are several Buragohain clans.
> Same may or may not be true of the other two that is Borgohain and the Borpatrogohains. That is why we donot see celebration of Borgohain and Borpatrogohains bonxawolis.
> I am just guessing. I will have to do some research though.

> I have a question, it has nothing to do with the celebration or the location. My high school lessons in Assam history taught me that the three ministerial positions of Buragohain, Borgohain and Borpatragohain were by appointment only - by the king. I was led to believe that the positions couldn't be inherited. The news report implies inheritance.
> Could it be that the king selected his ministers only from the clans with the name, but the person selected could be anyone from the clan? Thus a Phukan or a Borphukan could not aspire to be a Buragohain even if he had ministerial capabilities.

> Nice to see the name of my home village Bamun Pukhuri in the news. I grew up there, in nearby Boragaon village to be exact, and studied in Bamunpukhuri High School upto Class VII walking a mile to the school everyday bare footed. What unforgetable memories from those days.! Memories of all those places, Jhanji, Teok, Jog Duwar, Tamul Siga, Goro Mur, Gohain Gaon, Naw Boisa, Am Guri etc will always haunt me forever.
