AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat High Court on Thursday dismissed a PIL against Oscar nominated 'Slumdog Millionaire' which had raised objection that the title of the film was derogatory to the people of India.

NGO Dastak which filed the PIL had also prayed that the court should stop release of the film and its publicity in any form.

The division bench of Chief Justice KS Radhakrishnan and Justice Akil Kureshi dismissed the PIL saying that it "lack merit".

Court observed that the title 'Slumdog Millionaire' does not defy any public decency or morality and is not aimed at slum dwellers in general and was also not defamatory.

Referring to the contention of the petitioner that people who live in slums are characterized as slumdogs (in the film) the court observed that in the film as a whole, slumdog meant underdog from the slums.

The film 'Slumdog Millionaire' belies the traditional belief that slum-dwellers are underdogs, it further observed.

Oscar nominated 'Slumdog Millionaire', a rags-to-riches story of a Mumbai slum kid, directed by British filmmaker Danny Boyle was released in India last month.

Winner of four Golden Globe awards and ten Oscar nominations, 'Slumdog Millionaire' has been produced at a budget of seven million pounds.
