SIXTH ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF ARTS FROM THE BANKS OF
BRAHMAPUTRA - - March 4 & 5, 2009
It is the proud privilege of Impresario India to host for the sixth year in succession, the Festival of Arts from the Banks of Brahmaputra, one of the richest states in the North Eastern part of the country in its cultural heritage. The demographics of Assam are shared by the Assamese speaking majority and all the tribes and clans, the various religious groups and the castes and sub-castes which inhabit the land and come together to form a single entity called the
Assamese. Most of them live on the Banks of Brahmaputra. The diverse cultural mix continues even today as the tea plantation and the oil refineries attract people from many parts of the country. With so much of plurality of cultural influence, the music and dance from the Banks of Brahmaputra still remains a rich collage.
Impresario India’s 6th Annual Festival of Arts from the Banks of Brahmaputra will highlight on SATTRIYA DANCE TRADITION – The journey from Sanctum to Proscenium. Sattriya Dance is the latest to be declared as one of the Classical dance forms of India. The Sattriya Dance style was evolved in the 15th and 16th century when Vaishnava Saint and reformer Sri Sankardeva, a great artist and musician, composed his dance dramas himself. The tradition has been that these dances are performed in the Prayer hall by celibate monks. Dressed in white costumes and turbans, they play khol and perform dance creating choreographic designs.
The two day Festival this year has been composed and choreographed by Bayanacharya Guru Shri Ghanakanta Bora, one of the distinguished exponents and teachers of Sattriya Dance and Aankiya Bhaona. It will feature the gradual changes from the Sanctum to the Secular in respect of the tradition and present performances from both the contexts. It will also include the large and rich repertoire bringing in diverse features of the tradition. Some of the components will be Gayan Bayan : which forms the core of the Purvaranga. An orchestral group presentation with Khol (Drums) and Taal (Cymbals) with dance movements consisting of intricate foot works and intermediary hand gestures; Sutradhari Nac; Behar Nac – playful dance movements of the child God Krishna and his cowherd companions; Jhumra Nac; Cali Nac; Rajaghrya Cali – An improvised form of the Original dance number prevailing in the Sattra, for presenting in the royal court with the same
amount of grace and cadence; Mathura Vijay - A choreographic presentation based on Srimanta Sankaradeva’s Kamsa Vadh section of the Kirtan-Ghosa, assimilating elements from both the Bhaona and other dance sequences.
