Buljit,
Just one question:
Will the website or portal be in Oxomiya or in ever pervasive English? You know we like it in English. :-)
And don't tell me it will be in Hindi script, like the Bodo language!
Thank you in anticipation of a reply,
Dilipda

Assamese literature to go online
Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 2 – Assamese literature is set to gain a niche in
cyberspace, with Asam Sahitya Sabha planning to make select literary
works available through its own portal. The newly elected executive
members have favoured the idea of getting Assamese literature a wider
audience spread over the globe by making use of the Internet. This was
recently disclosed by the Sabha president Padma Shree Rong Bong Terang,
while interacting with the press.

The plan is to start with a
format that would be of interest to people of Assam scattered across
the world who have little or no access to Assamese books, journals or
newspapers but are interested in the language and literature of the
region.

“It would fulfil a long-felt need of a community,
which desires to keep in touch with the culture of their home... they
would once again have a strong bond with the literature of their land,”
said Paramananda Rajbongshi, general secretary of the Sabha.

The
idea has also gained ground as a tool to bring Assamese literature to a
section of youth staying away from the region. Many of them could
actually be encouraged to develop a love of literature through the
portal, the thinking goes.

“In order to enthuse the youth, the
format of the portal, its content, and presentation would have to be
attractive. In time we hope to have more youths with us, especially
those who are frequent visitors to cyberspace,” Rajbongshi remarked.

Asked
if the Sabha portal would feature rare texts and classics of Assamese
literature, he replied in the affirmative and stated that among the
material made available online would be some, which are out of print
but are of immense value.

Once complete, the website would
contain all the essential information about the Sabha’s history, its
achievements and the eminent personalities who have contributed to the
literature of the region.

On the issue of technically
competent manpower needed to build and maintain a website, sources
revealed that a few knowledgeable people have already volunteered for
the project. Buoyed by their support, the Sabha hopes to formally
launch the site after April 5 this year when the new executive takes
charge.
