AASU for package to check brain-drain
Correspondent
GUWAHATI, March 20 – Stressing the need for checking brain-drain from
Assam, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today demanded a special
higher education package for the education sector with allotment of
initial funds to the tune to Rs 10,000 crore. The student body also
demanded setting up of an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Indian Institute of
Science Education and Research (IISER), Indian Institute of Technology
(IIT) and an Indian Institute of Management (IIM), besides a technical
institute in the State.
“Until and unless new courses are
incorporated, the students would continue to leave the State, which is
resulting in brain-drain,” AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya said.
“The
Government has plans to set up some new IISERs in the country and we
feel that one of them should be allotted to Assam,” Bhattacharya
opined.
The AASU adviser, urging the Government to ensure
education to each and every child, also vouched for promotion of
vocational training in the State.
The student body also
reiterated its demand that the Government take immediate steps to keep
political personalities away from the management of the educational
institutes.
AASU general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi demanded
that the public representatives contesting the ensuing polls ensure
smooth functioning of the education system in the State, which is going
haywire.
“Modernization of the existing infrastructure and
resolving issues relating to the education system, including those of
the teachers, must be given top priority at the earliest,” Gogoi stated.
Meanwhile,
the AASU has extended its support to the convention, which the artistes
of the film industry are planning to organize on March 22 to chalk out
on action plan to bail out the regional film industry.
