GUWAHATI, June 13 – In a bid to encourage the meritorious students
 to continue with their
studies, the State Government
will extend scholarship to 6,000
meritorious students at the post-higher secondary and post-high school
or high madrassa stages. The amount of scholarship would also be
enhanced to Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 per month respectively at the two
stages, said Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at a press conference here
today. The
existing amount of post-high school/ high madrassa merit scholarship is
Rs 225 per month, he apprised. The scheme proposed by the State Government to encourage
meritorious students to continue with their studies, also include the
revival of the merit-cum-means scholarship at the rates of Rs 1,000 per
month for the post-higher secondary level and Rs 500 per month for the
post-high school/ high madrassa level.For the merit-cum-means scholarship, the
annual income of the parent/ guardian of the student should not exceed
Rs 60,000.The
above provisions will require a budgetary arrangement of around Rs 4
crore in a year. Each of the schools, which have produced rank holder students
in the recent examinations, will be rewarded with a cash amount of Rs 1
lakh, while a reward of Rs 75,000 will be offered to each of those
schools which have registered a pass percentage of 75 per cent. But the schools which have recorded a
success rate of zero to 30 per cent, would be served with show cause
notices. The school inspectors will also be made accountable for the
performance of the schools under their jurisdiction. The Government will involve the retired
principals and reputed teachers in the process of bringing in further
improvement in the education sector, he said.Besides, actions will be taken against
those teachers who are involved in corporeal punishment. A piece of
legislation is also there to take measures against such teachers, he
said, in reply to a question.Though the State Government would encourage those private
sector schools doing well, it would go for steps to regulate the
mushroom growth of the private schools in general, said the Chief
Minister.
