"I am not sure what makes some think that these leaders ought to be released,
escape prosecution, and elevated as heroes coming home after a hard fought
battle!"

XXX XXX Were you there in 1985 in Assam or prior to that since 1979? Do you remember the extravaganza to elevate the leaders of the so called democratic and peaceful 'Assam Movement" that opened the floodgates to the 'horrible' aftemath that some people now denounce as barbaric ? The seeds of pogroms, intolerance to any dissent, the chauvinism, the casteist tenor, the effort to turn it from a language issue to a religious issue were all sown in those days. Whether you compartmentalize or not, you have to admit the cause and effect relationship laid down by science accepted world-wide, unless of course you rely on meta-physics. It was a doom foretold. Moreover, social dynamics is not always a dinner party where pedantics go with spotless shirts and black ties; it requires statesmanship, tolerance, compromises among others to get over an impasse filled with muck.
