This statement:
"The statement from Pradip Gogoi that “discussion on sovereignty does not
mean it has to be
granted” carries much wisdom and connotes his eager ness to start a
dialogue."
It certainly good and prudent for the ULFA to feel that way, but I still
hold to the notion that if (and it's a big IF) the Govt. of India or GOA
ever falls into this trap that the 'Govt. can always not give in to the
sovereignty demand.'
That will never happen. Once some GOI represtentative allows this to be
discussed, it will lose all control.
The other part is if the ULFA actually means something else by
"sovereignty", then it should make what it vey clear and articulate what it
really wants.
After all, they are the ones making the demands, and if they can't even
articulate something as simple of what exactly they want (after 30 years at
this), then there is very little to say.
Lastly, it is very simple: The GOI or the GOA or any number of intellectuals
gathered together cannot give away Assam because they do not own it In fact
the GOI or the GOA or any of their representatives cannot legally, morally,
constitutionally or otherwise even entertain discussions on sovereignty.
They cannot give away what they don't own.
As far as the GOI and GOA the sovereignty question is moot as long as the
GOI and GOA exist as legal/constitutional representatives of the people of
India.
Now if the ULFA clearly articulates a need for some kind of autonomy, then
than can be discussed.
But the GOI/GOA must first take charge & show some *?***, and start the
prosecution process in all seriousness for these criminals. What kind of
country and system (that people keep griping about) will it then be, if
criminals are let loose so that some people want it?
