Sumanta Baruah, hailing from Assam (Biswanath Chariali, Sonitpur)
and now
based in Bangalore, is a cartoonist dealing mainly with topics
related to scienceand technology, and other themes ranging
from environment to politics andsociety in general. Of late,
he has been utilizing this media for expressing his
concern on burning issues like global warming and climate change.
His effort todraw science-cartoons has contributed to science
communication among themasses.
According
to Sumanta Baruah, science cartooning may be an effective tool for
popularizing science and technology among common people, imparting
scienceeducation to the children, creating scientific
awareness and inculcating scientifictemper in the society.
A science graduate with Chemistry major from Cotton College,
Gauhati University,Sumanta mastered in Computer Application
(MCA) from Tezpur CentralUniversity, Assam. Now he is posted
as a lead engineer at Samsung in Bangalore.
A self-taught cartoonist Sumanta made his debut in
the world of cartoons at anearly age of ten in 'Drishti'
(Oct., 1989), a science bimonthly edited by Dr D CGoswami, a
noted science communicator and writer of India. He was fascinated
and inspired by the works of renowned cartoonists like R K Laxman,
Ajit Ninan,and others and also the cartoons published in
Science Today, Span, etc., andgradually cartooning became an
irresistible passion for him.
Sumanta's cartoons have been published in many
magazines, newspapers andbooks. A few of them are:*
Science Reporter [NISCAIR (CSIR), New Delhi]* Resonance
(Indian Academy of Sciences, IISc, Bangalore)
* Popular science magazine and Journal of Assam Science Society*
Several newspapers and general magazines of Assam* Comic
strips in computer magazine of Asus Inc., United Kingdom*
Illustrations in books, e.g., 'Science Writers' Handbook' and 'Colourful
Chemistry'
etc.
Sumanta's cartoons have been
exhibited in two International Cartoon Festivals:* 3rd Rhodes
International Cartoon Exhibition, Greece (2006)*
International Cartoon Festival, Iran (2006)
* His cartoon on climate change was nominated by the British
Council as arunners-up for a nationwide exhibition (2009).
An
anthology of some of his cartoons drawn during 1994-2003, titled
'Science
Shapes Life' was published by the Assam chapter of Indian Science
Writers'Association(New Delhi) in 2003.
