NEW
DELHI, Jan 7 – In an encouraging development, students from the
North-east now need not travel outside the region to appear for crucial
English proficiency test, as Test of English as a Foreign Language
(TOEFL) centre is likely to start functioning at Tezpur University,
shortly.This was
disclosed by prominent Assamese non-resident Indian (NRI). Wahid Saleh,
who took the initiative to set up a TOEFL centre in the North-east.Currently,
technical evaluation is on and if all goes well, the institute should
get the certificate next week, Saleh, who is settled in Netherland, said
addressing a seminar held on the occasion of the Pravasi Bharatiya
Divas (PBD) that got under way here today. The
whole of North-east did not have s single TOEFL examination centre. Why
nobody has taken the initiative to set up a TOEFL centre in the region,
he wondered.Saleh
said he took up the issue with the authorities in US and was directed
to the concerned authority in India. Assam is very soon going to have a
TOEFL examination centre at Tezpur University, he declared. The TOEFL
test measures ability to use and understand English at the university
level. Each
year, nearly a million individuals of all ages take the TOEFL test.
Students planning to study at higher education institutions abroad,
scholarship and certification candidates, among others take the test.
