Heidi,
I took a course like this at the New School Univeristy in the Village NYC about three years ago.
At that time we used "The Language of New Media" a great book about New Media By Lev Manovich.
Here is the link to his website, I think he has a newer version of the book available.

Hands down th is the most comprehensive and culture based analysis of the digital media.
