I have used jotspot.com -> they are now a part of google - and have  
temporarily closed new membership.  The UI is very clean, it has a  
range of additional plug-ins like spreadsheets etc and and is  
friendly towards novices.  I think you can register to be informed  
when they open up again.

I have also had good experience with pbwiki.com
