I've been musing on related topics for the past year on my blog  
(clicknoise.net). I've collected a lot of useful links there, and I  
would hope that my insights as an indie musician who's straddled both  
"eras" are an interesting read, if nothing else. Do hit me up if you  
see anything there you might want to converse about; my dissertation  
is going to be in this area.
