CHI 2008 Workshop:
Secrets and Lies in Computer-Mediated Interaction: Theory, Methods  
and Design
Florence, Italy: April 6th

The keeping of secrets and the practicing of deception are a  
commonplace and important part of everyday social interaction. A  
clear understanding of why and how people deceive and keep secrets in  
computer-mediated interaction (CMI), and when they choose to reveal  
intimate aspects of themselves, is central to the design of socially  
intelligent tools.

This workshop will focus on:

1. Theories and Methods for Studying Secrets and Lies
What theories and models of these social actions exist?
Can a unified model be developed?
What methods are available, and is there potential for the cross- 
fertilization of methods across different domains and disciplines?

2. Design Challenges for HCI Practitioners
Can room for socially beneficial deception and secrecy be designed  
into systems?
Or should designers leave it to users to adapt systems to their own  
practices of deception and secrets?
What are the security implications of designing with deception and  
secrecy in mind?

We aim to bring together researchers, designers and practitioners  
from HCI and the social sciences (communication, psychology, sociology).

Interested participants are asked to submit a 2-4 page position paper  
for review that should either situate the participants’ interests and  
background among the themes of the workshop, or report on preliminary  
research findings related to secrets or lies in CMI. More information

Papers should conform to the CHI Extended Abstracts format (http:// 
www.chi2007.org/submit/eaformat.php).

To participate, one author is required to register for the workshop  
(approx $150 for a one day workshop) and one day of CHI 2008.
