One idea is to look at the use of social media by cyberactivists. Two simple readings to start with and to look at their references is Jungherr's Digiactive guide of Twitter (http://box.jisko.net/d/9f4156a8) and Myers' Communication technologies and social movements, which explains early uses of social mexia by cyberactivists.
