Shoshana Zuboff coined the word "informate" in her 1988 book "In the Age of the Smart Machine".  Here, to informate is  to translate newly automated activities into data and information for wide-ranging display - with the consequence of loss of the environmental affordances that previously assisted in the conduct of the activity.
