Assistant Professor of Practice in First Year Writing

The Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas Tech University seeks an experienced and innovative educator to join its faculty as an assistant professor of practice specializing in teaching first-year writing (FYW).

We are embarking on an exciting, challenging effort to reinvigorate how we teach FYW at Texas Tech. Already we teach almost 3,000 students a semester in introduction and advanced composition. We want to increase that number, but just as important, we want to improve the experience of the students enrolled in FYW, as well as those assigned to teach it as graduate teaching assistants. The successful candidate will contribute to our efforts to remake FYW, teaching 6 large-section (100-plus students per section with breakout sessions taught by TAs) FYW courses per year, as well as mentoring graduate student teaching assistants (TAs) assigned to support that teaching.

Texas Tech University is designated as a Carnegie Tier One (Highest Research Activity) institution. It has a law school, a medical school, and colleges of Arts and Sciences, Agriculture, Architecture, Business Administration, Engineering, Human Sciences, Media and Communication, and Visual and Performing Arts. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest of these, representing 28% of the total enrollment of 35,000. The university is located in Lubbock, a rapidly growing city of more than 300,000 on the high plains. Lubbock enjoys 260 days of sunshine every year. Mountains with skiing and other activities are only 4 hours away, and just a 5-hour drive can take you west to Albuquerque or east to Dallas-Fort Worth.

Candidates with an earned doctorate in English, specializing in composition studies, writing program administration (WPA), or a related area, with at least 5 years of university-level teaching experience, are preferred. Experience mentoring graduate student TAs is desired. In addition, experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students is highly desirable.

Candidates who have very strong records of scholarship supported by extramural funding and who have the proven capacity or clear potential to bring externally sponsored research to Texas Tech are encouraged to apply. Service duties include program-building, as well as commitment to extra-curricular activities. Service to the department, college, and university is expected.

As an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer, Texas Tech University is dedicated to the goal of building a culturally diverse faculty committed to teaching and working in a multicultural environment. We actively encourage applications from all those who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community at Texas Tech University. The university welcomes applications from minorities, women, protected veterans, persons with disabilities, and dual-career couples.

For more information on our FYW program in English, see http://www.depts.ttu.edu/english <http://www.depts.ttu.edu/english>. This assistant professor of practice position in the Department of English is 3-year appointment, contingent on successful annual and cumulative performance appraisals. After 6 years of successful work, the assistant professor of practice can be recommended by the College Dean for a continuous service appointment.

Candidates must apply online at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/hr/workattexastech/ <http://www.depts.ttu.edu/hr/workattexastech/> with letter of application and vita. Dossiers will be solicited later from exceptionally qualified candidates. Applications will be accepted until October 31. Screening starts October 15. Direct inquiries to the chair of the search committee, Dr. Michael Faris (michael.faris at ttu.edu <mailto:michael.faris at ttu.edu> ).
