The Department of Arts, Culture and Media at the University of Toronto 
Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream 
position in Media Studies. The appointment will be at the rank of 
Assistant Professor, and will commence on July 1, 2019, or shortly 
thereafter.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Media Studies, Communication 
or another related field by the time of appointment, or shortly 
thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and 
teaching. We are seeking candidates with demonstrated research 
excellence at the intersection of cultural studies, social change, and 
digital culture. The candidate must bring to the position a 
transnational and interdisciplinary approach to critical cultural 
theories and practices of social change and digital media in Canada and 
beyond. This position will address the importance of social change as a 
motivator for techno-cultural development and will meet current needs of 
the Media, Journalism, and Digital Cultures program in the Department of 
Arts, Culture & Media. Candidates must have demonstrable expertise in 
one or more of the following areas: affect studies, histories of social 
change and digital culture or media, or feminist, critical race, 
activist, decolonial, queer and/or other networks and social movements.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated 
by: a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals 
or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards; the 
submitted research statement; presentations at significant conferences; 
awards and accolades; and strong endorsements from referees of high 
standing. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake 
independent research and/or creative professional activity at the 
highest international level and to establish an outstanding, 
competitive, and externally funded program of research.

Candidates must demonstrate an ongoing commitment to excellence in 
teaching. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through 
teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier, a teaching statement, 
sample course syllabi, the teaching evaluations submitted as part of the 
application, as well as strong letters of reference, and documentation 
indicating innovation in any other teaching related activities, such as 
leading workshops or seminars.

The successful candidate should also have the demonstrated ability to 
work within our interdisciplinary arts department where horizontal 
connections among faculty of different fields are encouraged:

strengthen our existing departmental strengths. The successful candidate 
will be expected to articulate and implement a vision for developing new
