Here comes the final reminder about the symposium organized by The Cultural Matters Group at the Department of Sociology, Uppsala University on Sept. 27-28 this year.

The symposium is called Dis / Connection: Conflicts, Activism and Reciprocity Online and Beyond and we look forward to receiving your papers!

Deadline for submissions is next week- June 18, 2018.

The symposium focuses on a fundamental aspect of social relationships, namely the idea of connection. We invite abstract submissions on the possibilities of connectivity, but also the problems and promises of the act of disconnection. Digital networks embedded in everyday lives have transformed virtually every aspect of social life ? from intimate relations with family and friends to the collective acts of digital activism. Digital relations and connections are our starting point for a broader discussion of notions of connectivity and how they are developing, failing, or simply being reproduced. Therefore, we also focus on the idea of disconnection as a voluntary act to take control over one?s use of digital technologies, as an act of resistance and of saying no to the opaque structures of power and control in the networked society. The goal is to further the discussion on the gains, costs and possibilities of ethical life in the culture of hyperconnectivity. The symposium also aims
 to address destructive functions of connected living, such as surveillance, trolls, selfies, fake news, fake news accusations, sexual harassment, click baiting, commercialism, terrorism, viruses, spam, and the colonization of private life. In other words, we are interested in how connectivity and disconnectivity can give rise to and facilitate social inclusion and democratic processes, as well as exclusion, isolation and conflict.

Artist Mako Ishizuka will put her thoughts on the themes of the symposium into a mind-map on site, in dialogue with the symposium participants.

one of our MA students is exploring the role of diverse emotions - first
of all, anger - in responses to news stories on three major Norwegian
news sites.  The broad hypothesis is that anger will be most prevalent
and effective in catalyzing further response (including sharing, likes,
etc.) - but four emotions total are taken on board: sadness, anger,
surprise, and happiness.

1) There is an online tool available for analyzing the emotive content
of texts - "The SATI API enables to perform Sentiment Analysis from
Textual Information", etc.  Comments and observations on its utility,
validity?

2) Recommendations, please, for either useful examples of similar
research, especially with a view towards methods of accumulating and
then analyzing emoticons, and/or other suggestions regarding possible tools?

ABOUT THE DATASET CHALLENGE

For the first Dataset Challenge as part of our European Symposium on Societal Challenges in CSS, we invite researchers and practitioners from the spectrum of Social and Computational Sciences to approach a common dataset. The aim of this challenge is to encourage creative engagement with data from pluralistic perspectives in order to foster dialogue across disciplines. We envision that this challenge will lead to fruitful, in-depth discussions during the symposium, as participants will have a shared basis through interaction with the dataset(s), but varying ideas of where to go with it.

The research questions and methods applied to the dataset(s) can be drawn from the broad spectrum of Computational Social Science. They should ideally be related to this year's symposium topic 'bias and discrimination' and approach new ways of learning about bias, be it by putting forward new research designs and questions, or by applying state-of-the-art methods to identify data patterns that can inform theory building. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

* Comparisons of user/political actor behaviour
* Unequal structures and political action
* Biases in Web data
* Missing data
* Coverage bias on different platforms / through different collection methods

We ask participants of the dataset challenge to be creative in their approach to the data.

The work presented at the symposium can be early stage, but should be methodically sound and provide either preliminary insights into an interesting research question or first inductively-reached conclusions of systematic patterns of bias in the dataset. These can also be on a meta-level or may be designated to positioning the work in broader theoretical contexts, e.g., about biases in the data collection. We especially invite inventive combinations with other datasets (e.g., digital trace data, survey data, multimedia data, multilingual data, data from other case studies).

Submissions selected by our review committee will be presented in a special dataset challenge session at the pre-symposium day (December 5, 2018).

A jury will select the best presentation (including any created resources, such as secondary datasets or analysis code) to be awarded the very first Euro CSS Dataset Challenge Award.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Extended abstracts of work in progress or completed projects based on the suggested dataset(s) should be submitted in English in PDF format via the EasyChair submission system: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=csssymposium18

Submissions should be abstracts of approx. 2-3 pages (maximum up to 1000 words plus references and figures).

The abstract submissions will be evaluated based on originality and the potential to stimulate interesting discussions, but should also consider the feasibility of the proposed idea. Please consider that reviewers will be from an interdisciplinary community, therefore describe your ideas, approaches and potential complementary datasets in sufficient detail.

Deadline for submissions to the dataset challenge is September 1, 2018. The final work will be presented at the symposium.

The provided datasets all relate to the topic of political communication in Germany, particularly around the German federal election which took place in September 2017. Participants of the challenge should make use of one or more of the main datasets listed below and are encouraged to combine them or compare them among each other.

Additional datasets listed on the website may also be used, as well as any other datasets of the participants' choice (qualitative, quantitative, textual, multimedia, etc.).

Welcome to the 6th International Conference on Enterprise Systems.
Enterprise Systems (ES), also referred to as Enterprise Information Systems,
has become increasingly popular over the last 20 years because it integrates
and extends business processes across the boundaries of business functions
and corporate walls, as well as country border lines. The International
Conference on Enterprise Systems (ES) has been held every year since 2013.
The sixth in the series will be held at St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus,
8-9 October, 2018. The conference is hosted by the Department of Computer
Science, University of Cyprus.

This conference series is focusing on both the technical and application
aspects of enterprise systems, the complex and cross-disciplinary
problems of enterprise integration, and the new technological frontiers
such as Industrial Integration, Industrial Information Integration, and
Industry 4.0. The objectives of the conference are to provide high quality
research and professional interactions for the advancement of science

SCOPE

We welcome original and survey articles about the latest advances of
technology. The final results can be state-of-the-art, requirements,
fundamental theories, models, frameworks, algorithms, methodologies,
platforms, protocols, prototypes, testbeds, field trials, case
studies/stories, field experiences, standardization efforts, regulatory
activities, education and training innovations, etc. The application
areas include aeronautics and astronautics, agriculture, automotive,
building, construction, energy, finance, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing,
process industry, power, transportation, etc.

PAPER SUBMISSION

The submitted paper should adhere to the double-blind review policy. All
papers will be double-blind reviewed by the Program Committee on the basis
of technical quality, relevance, originality, significance, and clarity. All paper
submissions will be handled electronically. Papers that do not comply with
the Submission Guidelines will be rejected without review.

Paper types:
? Full papers present final result. They must not exceed 8 pages.
? Short papers can contain preliminary results. They must not exceed 6
pages.
? Work-in-progress papers to present valuable and latest progresses of
ongoing projects: 4 pages.

this is a friendly reminder that the dealdine for the 5th Internet
Science conference (INSCI'2018) is approaching! The conference in
St.Petersburg, Russia, is gathering academics, policymakers, and
industry representatives to discuss digital freedoms and user
empowerment in various regions of the world. The 2018 deadline has
been extended to June 15.
With all the recent controversies, we consider Russia to be a hot spot
for discussing these topics.
Springer LNCS series is publishing the INSCI proceedings, and we will
also publish a special issue of Media and Communication (SJR Q2) in
the aftermath.

have a publication opportunity for you! The *International Journal of
Designs for Learning *(

multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed online journal dedicated to publishing
descriptions of artifacts, environments and experiences created to promote
and support learning in all contexts by designers in any field.

AECT's Division of Distance Learning is sponsoring a special issue of IJDL
dedicated to online and distance design cases that detail the key moments
in the design process for learning with high-stakes/high-impact
implications. These contexts often have regulated initial and continuing
education requirements that require special considerations. For some, the
length of the learning experience must meet minimum requirements or be
accessible offline only. For others, the content may be particularly
sensitive, requiring a delicacy with respect to content presentation not
often encountered in other learning designs. Common learners who experience
these designs include emergency responders, active duty military,
incarcerated populations, medical professionals, crisis counselors,
classified security personnel, and utility and public works employees.

This special issue will be guest edited by Dr. Tonia A. Dousay, University
