[Air-L] 1st Call for Tutorials: CHIIR 2020

CHIIR 2020 is pleased to invite proposals for tutorials to be given in conjunction with the conference. The goal of the tutorials is to provide conference attendees, including early-career researchers and researchers crossing-over from related disciplines, with an opportunity to learn about concepts and techniques for research into user-centered aspects of information interaction and information retrieval. Tutorials also serve as a venue to share presenters’ expertise with the global community of user-centered information retrieval researchers and practitioners. Tutorials focus on specific topics including, but not limited to:

  *   Information seeking, including task-based and exploratory studies

  *
Search interfaces, including those for specialized tasks, populations and domains
  *
User-centered design approaches to humans interacting with information and systems
  *
Interaction techniques for information retrieval and discovery
  *
Online information seeking, including log analysis of search and browsing
  *
Modeling and simulation of information interaction
  *
Information use, including measures of use as well as broader sense-making
  *
Field and case studies relevant to understanding prerequisites for information searching, design and access
  *
User-centered evaluation methods and measures, including measures of user experience and performance, experiment and search task design, eye-tracking and neuro-physiological approaches, data analysis methods, and usability
  *
Human interaction and experience with conversational information systems
  *
Context-aware and personalized search, including design, contextual features and analysis of information interaction
  *
Information visualization and visual analytics, including search result presentation
  *
Collaborative information seeking and social search, including social utility and network analysis for information interaction
  *
Conversational search and other types of stateful and multi-turn interactions between users and search applications
  *
Insights and analyses related to human experiences and usage trends with recommendation technologies
  *
Information interaction and seeking with mobile devices and services

Tutorials could be either full-day or half-day, and the length of your proposed tutorial should be commensurate with the presented materials and the projected interest of the CHIIR community in the tutorial topic.

We actively encourage both researchers and industry practitioners to submit tutorial proposals that target different levels of expertise and different interests. We also encourage the submission of hands-on tutorials that combine theoretical concepts with practical exercises.


PROPOSAL FORMAT AND SUBMISSION

The tutorial proposal should be a PDF document no more than 4 pages long (including references), submitted by e-mail to tutorials.chiir2020 at gmail.com<mailto:tutorials.chiir2020 at gmail.com> and organized as follows:

  *   Title and abstract: Propose a title and an abstract that allows conference attendees to quickly and accurately understand the subject matter of the tutorial.

  *
Format of the tutorial: Full-day or half-day.
  *
Tutorial presenter(s): Name, email address, and affiliation of tutorial presenter(s). Each listed presenter must present in person at the conference. Please include relevant teaching experiences and history of prior tutorials by the presenter(s) as well as a list of relevant publications by the presenter(s).
  *
Motivation: Explain why your topic is important to the CHIIR community and what you hope the participants will learn by attending your tutorial.
  *
Focus: In this section, please provide a syllabus outlining the content of the tutorial and the learning outcomes. This syllabus should be realistic given the time available. Please also describe your use of the time available (e.g., morning lectures: fundamentals and case studies; afternoon panel discussion or brainstorming sessions, etc.).
  *
Target audience: (introductory, intermediate, advanced) and prerequisite knowledge or skills.
  *
Special requirements: If relevant, include a list of special requirements for the tutorial room (e.g., flipcharts, other visual aids).
  *
Availability of materials: We encourage (but do not require) the inclusion of a statement that the materials (slides, readings, and/or code) used/mentioned in the tutorial will be publicly available after the tutorial.


EVALUATION CRITERIA

Tutorial proposals will be reviewed according to: (1) ability of the tutorial to contribute to strengthening the foundations of research into user-centered aspects of information interaction and information retrieval, or to broadening the field to look at important new challenges and techniques, (2) experience and skill of the presenter(s), and (3) the value of any materials released with the tutorial for the community.

Camera-ready tutorial summary deadline: Monday January 13, 2020
