Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy
Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, University of Oxford

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join us at the Programme in Comparative Media Law at Policy at the University of Oxford's Centre for Socio-Legal Studies.  The researcher will contribute to the European Research Council- funded project, ConflictNet, and specifically to a research stream that examines how social media and new technologies are changing everyday politics in areas where the state has limited reach in Africa. This project is led by Nicole Stremlau.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an international team working closely with universities in Africa.  The position involves field research (dependent on the evolving situation with COVID19); collaborating with research assistants; developing research frameworks; overseeing and contributing to data collection; analysis and writing up of research findings. The successful applicant will hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in the social sciences including African studies, law, anthropology, politics; have research experience, preferably in Eastern Africa; publications in the field of African studies, internet/media studies, justice and security, or governance; experience with contributing ideas for new research projects particularly related to governance, law, and new technologies in Africa.

We are willing to consider applicants for 1 full-time (100% FTE) post or 2 part-time (around 50% FTE) posts.  Please make it clear in your application letter which you would prefer.

The post is fixed term until 31 July 2023.  The postholder will be based in the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Manor Road Building, Manor Road, Oxford, OX1 3UQ
