[Air-L] AOIR Discord?

We could set up bridging across different chat applications using Matrix,
so that messages are synchronised between services and we aren't beholden
to any one platform. I've set up a federated chat for us to test out:

- Matrix: https://matrix.to/#/#aoir:matrix.org
- Discord: https://discord.gg/HwdKjeMVWb

I agree that a Listserv is uniquely effective for the kind of
communications AoIR facilitates, but having additional avenues of
connection wouldn't hurt so long as content doesn't get siloed and lost.
I'm in a few academic Discord servers, and they're good to have around even
if the activity tends to be sporadic.

If communications are syndicated by the users between the siloes, it can be
better to have multiple contexts than fewer. That's already how Academic
Twitter works (see https://indieweb.org/POSSE). We can also set up an RSS
bot that updates the chat with messages sent to the AoIR listserv. It would
help people to keep up with the conversations through platforms other than
Twitter or email.

Our own Mastodon instance would be a great idea, too. The benefit of having
our own instance set up would be that we can make our own governance
decisions, while still federating with other instances like scholar.social.
A managed hosting service costs about $40-80 for 500-2000 members. I'm
willing to chip in and help out with it.
Kind regards,
Seong-Young Her
