Dear all,

The QUT GenAI Lab<https://research.qut.edu.au/genailab/> is excited to announce three PhD Scholarships open for prospective students interested in joining us for Semester 2, 2024 (commencing in July). If you or anyone you know has a recent Honours or Masters degree with a significant research component, and/or equivalent industry research experience, we want to hear from you!

Applications close 31 May, but it is essential to first email either Distinguished Professor Jean Burgess<https://www.qut.edu.au/about/our-people/academic-profiles/jean.burgess> or Dr Aaron Snoswell<https://www.qut.edu.au/about/our-people/academic-profiles/a.snoswell> (depending on which project you are interested in) to discuss your project idea, as soon as possible – the details of what to put in this email are at the links below.

You will develop an independent project on one of the following three topics:

  * Generative AI in the Platform Economy<https://www.qut.edu.au/study/fees-and-scholarships/scholarships/generative-ai-in-the-platform-economy-qut-generative-ai-lab-phd-scholarship> – draw on theories and methods from digital media and communication, sociology and/or STS to investigate an aspect of the Generative AI economy, understood as an emergent part of the platform economy. (Supervised by Distinguished Professor Jean Burgess<https://www.qut.edu.au/about/our-people/academic-profiles/jean.burgess> and Dr Kevin Witzenberger<https://www.qut.edu.au/about/our-people/academic-profiles/kevin.witzenberger>)

  * Generative Authenticity and Internet Cultures<https://www.qut.edu.au/study/fees-and-scholarships/scholarships/generative-authenticity-and-internet-cultures-qut-generative-ai-lab-phd-scholarship> – undertake an independent project aligned with the larger, multi-institutional Generative Authenticity project within the ADM+S Centre<https://www.admscentre.org.au/event/re-framing/> and draw on approaches from communication and media studies to investigate an aspect of authenticity in internet cultures. (Supervised by Distinguished Professor Jean Burgess<https://www.qut.edu.au/about/our-people/academic-profiles/jean.burgess>)

  * Preference, Rewards and Value Alignment<https://www.qut.edu.au/study/fees-and-scholarships/scholarships/preferences-rewards-and-value-alignment-qut-generative-ai-lab-phd-scholarship> – undertake research on the preference and reward models used to achieve ‘value alignment’ in GenAI systems, using a combination of computational, critical, and qualitative methods. (Supervised by Dr Aaron Snoswell<https://www.qut.edu.au/about/our-people/academic-profiles/a.snoswell>)

*Funding Amount: $33,637 AUD per annum
*Duration: 3.5Y
*Deadline: 31st of May 2024
