[Apologies for any cross-posting]
Dear Colleagues –

I am very happy to share that my new book, Crowded Out: The True Costs of Crowdfunding Healthcare<https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/744353/crowded-out-by-nora-kenworthy/>, is out today with MIT Press (https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/744353/crowded-out-by-nora-kenworthy/).

Crowdfunding for health and social needs has become quite inescapable in our lives, and GoFundMe is often our knee-jerk response to crisis. But our impressions of crowdfunding are often very different from its realities. This book offers unexpected and important lessons for broad audiences, from exploring how it is that 40% of health campaigns raise less than $70, or what actually happens when someone’s campaign goes viral, to explaining how crowdfunding is tied to some of our most harmful ideas about charity and deservingness. Ultimately, Crowded Out<https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/744353/crowded-out-by-nora-kenworthy/> explores how crowdfunding is reinforcing health inequities, and offers a guide for how we can do better – on our own and in community – to work towards health justice in a digital world.

MIT Press is offering discount codes in celebration of pub day: 30% off today (5/21) with code PUBDAY30, and after today, 20% off with code READMIT20. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/744353/crowded-out-by-nora-kenworthy/

We’ll have two online events in the coming weeks which you are also welcome to attend – one with Town Hall Seattle<https://townhallseattle.org/event/nora-kenworthy/> on May 28 (online or in person), and another with the Debt Collective<https://debtcollective.org/event/the-true-costs-of-crowdfunding-healthcare-with-nora-kenworthy/> on June 13 (fully online).

Thank you!
Nora Kenworthy
