Dear AoIR community - I hope you are all doing as OK as possible,

If my cross-posting of this announcement has upset you then I apologise
sincerely! If not, please read on.

I just wanted to let everyone know that my book 'Influencer Creep' is now
available for pre order with University of California Press. It will be out
at the end of October 2025. Order here:
https://www.ucpress.edu/books/influencer-creep/paper

Based on ethnographic research with influencers and artists, this book
offers a deep dive into three key parts of influencer culture and how they
have transformed creative work: optimisation, authenticity and self
branding. I analyse how each of these practices have been finessed within
influencer culture, and then examine ways that they have transformed art
worlds and artistic practice.

Influencer creep recognises that influencers are specialists at navigating
the technical requirements of platforms, capturing the attention of an
audience and growing brand value, and that this work is highly skilled. The
book takes influencers seriously as sophisticated architects of some of the
very strategies that shape life as lived on social media today.

But don't just take my word for it! Professor Thomas Poell, coauthor of
Platforms and Cultural Production, says: "Both a page-turner and a thorough
academic study. Drawing on ethnographic research and interviews with
influencers and artists, Sophie Bishop astutely and creatively combines
theoretical reflection with lively examples of how influencer practices and
strategies are increasingly used in professional and everyday life."

I would love to give some book talks and whatever else might seem
appropriate - please get in touch!

Best wishes

Sophie
