Social media data between research and infrastructure - sustainable archiving, cataloguing and access

CONFERENCE TOPICS:
Online platforms, especially social media platforms, are both research objects and sources of data for a variety of research approaches in the humanities and social sciences, computer science, and the natural and life sciences. The historical evolution of social media makes them a part of our digital cultural heritage. However, the processes used by institutions to archive and document social media data are still only rudimentary, not least because of their economic, social and aesthetic characteristics and the unique attributes of media technology. Researchers, research institutions and cultural heritage institutions therefore face a wide range of problems in terms of their archiving, indexing and use. Researchers who wish to work with social media data also encounter numerous new challenges, especially when fundamental changes such as the elimination of application programming interfaces (APIs) impact access to specific data from online platforms.
The archiving, indexing and use of dynamic data from social media are therefore fraught with problems which researchers, research institutions, libraries and archives have to tackle in a consistent manner. Ideally, solutions to these problems should be developed cooperatively, since this requires extensive effort which would be beyond the scope of a single data community or discipline.
The aim of the conference is therefore to enable libraries, archives, infrastructural facilities, research institutions and researchers to network and exchange experiences with archiving and the sustainable use of data and digital objects from social media. We explicitly welcome case studies and presentations on solutions and their practical implementation as well as reports on research findings.
We are particularly interested in contributions on the following key topics:
·         Sustainable infrastructure for collecting and providing access to social media content
·         Interaction between researchers and archiving institutions
·         Ethical issues and best practices
·         Legal issues and solutions
·         Challenges posed by restrictive data access  from social media platforms
·         Experiences with data access in the context of the Digital Services Act
·         Status and preservation of social media from an archival and cultural-historical perspective, e.g. posts, interactions, platform elements
·         Consolidation of collections, corpora, holdings
·         Metadata, data documentation and cataloguing social media data
·         Use of AI & LLMs for data documentation and indexing purposes
·         Initiatives focusing on archiving and access
·         Concepts for the provision and use of derivatives (aggregated or derivative formats) from social media
·         Experiences with the reusability of available data

DATE & LANGUAGE:
The conference will take place from 17 to 19 March 2026 at the German National Library in Frankfurt am Main. The main conference language is German. However, contributions can also be submitted in English. We aim to schedule all English-language presentations together in one day, if possible.

SUBMISSIONS:
We look forward to receiving your submissions for presentations and your proposals for tutorials, workshops or interactive formats.
PRESENTATIONS / POSTERS: Please submit your proposals in the form of abstracts containing a maximum of 500 words (plus bibliographies and max. 1 illustration). Contributions can be based on research findings or personal experience and may be presented in German or English. The programme committee will decide which contributions to accept as oral presentations and which as posters.
Proposals for TUTORIALS, WORKSHOPS, themed sessions and other interactive formats should not exceed two pages and should contain the following information: proposed format and realisation, language, target group (potential number of participants), motivation and goals. In addition, please tell us whether you require special technical equipment or facilities. We will then determine how these can be provided on site.

PARTICIPATION:
The conference will take place in person at the German National Library in Frankfurt am Main. There are currently no plans to stream the event online. The participation fee is approx. 50 euros.
Speakers who do not have their own travel funds may apply for up to 300 euros to cover travel and accommodation expenses (per presentation for max. one person).

KONFERENZTHEMEN
Online-Plattformen und insbesondere Soziale Medien sind Datenquellen und Gegenstand für unterschiedliche Forschungsansätze in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften, in der Informatik und in den Natur- und Lebenswissenschaften. In ihrer historischen Entwicklung sind sie Teil des digitalen Kulturerbes, für das eine institutionelle Archivierung und Dokumentation erst in Ansätzen existiert, nicht zuletzt aufgrund der medientechnischen, ökonomischen, sozialen und ästhetischen Besonderheiten. Forschung, Forschungsinstitute und Kulturerbe-Einrichtungen sind dadurch hinsichtlich der Archivierung, Erschließung und Nachnutzung vor vielfältige Probleme gestellt. Und auch Forschende, die mit Social Media Daten arbeiten wollen, sehen sich immer neuen Herausforderungen gegenüber, insbesondere wenn sich der Zugang zu bestimmten Online-Plattform-Daten beispielsweise durch den Wegfall von Programmierschnittstellen (APIs) grundlegend ändert.
Die Archivierung, Erschließung und Nachnutzung dynamischer Daten aus sozialen Medien ist also mit Problemstellungen konfrontiert, die Forschende, Forschungseinrichtungen, Bibliotheken und Archive in ähnlicher Weise betreffen, und für die im besten Fall gemeinsam Lösungsansätze entwickelt werden können. Dies bedarf umfassender Anstrengungen, die nicht allein aus einer Community oder Disziplin heraus zu leisten sind.
Ziel der Konferenz ist daher die Vernetzung von Bibliotheken, Archiven, Infrastruktureinrichtungen, Forschungsinstituten und Forschenden rund um die Archivierung und nachhaltige Nutzung von Daten und digitalen Objekten aus sozialen Medien.
Wir sind besonders interessiert an Beiträgen, die folgende Themenschwerpunkte berühren:
* Nachhaltige Infrastruktur für die Sammlung und Bereitstellung von Social-Media-Inhalten
* Zusammenspiel von Forschung und Archiv
* Ethische Fragen und Best Practices
* Rechtliche Fragen und Lösungsansätze
* Herausforderungen durch den Wegfall bisheriger Möglichkeiten, Daten bei Social-Media-Plattformen abzurufen
* Erfahrungen mit Datenzugang im Kontext des Digital Services Act
* Status und Erhaltung von Social Media aus archivarischer und kulturhistorischer Sicht, z. B. Posts, Interaktionen, Plattformelemente
* Zusammenführen von Sammlungen, Korpora, Beständen
* Metadaten, Datendokumentation und Erschließung von Social-Media-Daten
* Einsatz von KI / LLMs für die Datendokumentation und Erschließung
* Initiativen zur Archivierung und Bereitstellung
* Konzepte für die Bereitstellung und Nutzung von Derivaten (aggregierten oder abgeleiteten Formaten) aus sozialen Medien Erfahrungen mit der Nachnutzbarkeit vorhandener Daten

Ziel der Veranstaltung ist die Vernetzung und der Erfahrungsaustausch rund um die genannten Themen. Neben der Präsentation von Forschungsergebnissen sind daher explizit auch Fallbeispiele und Präsentationen zu praktischer Umsetzung und Lösungsansätzen willkommen.

FORMAT:
Die Tagung findet vom 17.3. bis 19.3.2026 in der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek in Frankfurt am Main statt. Die Haupt-Konferenzsprache ist Deutsch. Beiträge können jedoch auch in englischer Sprache eingereicht werden. Englischsprachige Beiträge werden nach Möglichkeit an einem Tag gemeinsam gebündelt.

EINREICHUNGEN:
Wir freuen uns über Einreichungen für Vorträge sowie über Vorschläge für Tutorials, Workshops oder interaktive Formate.
VORTRÄGE/POSTER: Vorschläge werden als Abstracts von maximal 500 Wörtern eingereicht (zuzüglich Literaturangaben und max. 1 Abbildung). Beiträge können auf Forschungsergebnissen oder eigener Praxiserfahrung basieren. Beiträge sind in deutscher oder englischer Sprache möglich. Das Programmkomitee entscheidet, welche Beiträge als Vorträge und welche als Poster angenommen werden.
ANDERE FORMATE: Vorschläge für Tutorials, Workshops, thematische Sessions oder andere interaktive Formate können in maximal zwei Seiten beschrieben werden. Sie sollten die folgenden Angaben enthalten: vorgeschlagenes Format und Umsetzung, Sprache, Zielgruppe (potentielle Teilnehmendenzahl), Motivation und Ziele. Sollte spezielle technische oder räumliche Ausstattung benötigt werden, so ist dies ebenfalls anzugeben, damit die Umsetzbarkeit vor Ort geprüft werden kann.

TEILNAHME:
Die Konferenz findet vor Ort an der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek in Frankfurt a. M. statt. Eine Online-Übertragung ist zunächst nicht geplant. Die Teilnahmegebühr wird bei ca. 50 Euro liegen.
Für Vortragende, die nicht über eigene Reisemittel verfügen, können auf Antrag Reise- und Übernachtungskosten bis maximal 300 Euro übernommen werden (pro Vortrag für max. eine Person).
