GUWAHATI, AUGUST 11:The US Consulate in Kolkata has just been sent an
unusual request. It's from the Assam State Madrasa Board, seeking its help
in organising a training programme for teachers in the 500-odd madrasas in
the state.

Assam State Madrasa Board secretary Dr Abdul Qayyum Al-Aman said the Board
had written to the US Consul-General in Kolkata and was looking forward to a
positive response. Al-Aman was speaking on ''Current Trends in Islamic
education'' at a seminar organised here by the American Center.

The Board is seeking US expertise for upgrading the skills of its English
teachers, Al-Aman said. The Board recently introduced a computer training
programme in madrasas in the state.

Al-Aman also said that though some people were trying to dismiss madrasas as
producing ''good old Mullahs who fall prey to so-called jehadi forces,'' it
was a fact that the age-old education system in madrasas required to be
revamped. ''The government has a big role to play to improve madrasa
education and modernise the whole system,'' Al-Aman said.

''There is no problem in requesting the US or for that matter any other
agency to help us improve the education system,'' Al-Aman said.
