NFDC succour for Assam
A STAFF REPORTER Jahnu Baruah addresses mediapersons in Guwahati on Saturday. Picture by Eastern Projections Guwahati, Aug. 26: The National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) will take up the issue of reviving the film industry of the Northeast, particularly that of Assam, with the Centre.
Newly-elected president of North East Film and Television Producers-Directors Association and award-winning director Jahnu Baruah told newsmen here today that the NFDC had decided in a meeting held in New Delhi last month that it would raise the issue of providing financial assistance to regional film industries with the Centre. NFDC managing director Neena Gupta and chairman M. Seth were also present at the meeting.
Lack of finance has always been the primary cause of concern for Assamese filmmakers and imposition of a complete ban on films depicting alien culture by militant groups has delivered a fatal blow to the tottering industry.
The Assam government has declared a film policy but failed to address some of the vital points in a concrete way, Baruah said.
He said a proper and consistent implementation of the policy could have improved the condition of the Assam film industry.
In this matter, an all-round detailed discussion in the form of seminars and healthy debates are necessary. We are keen to hold a seminar with all sections related to film finance, production and distribution, including the State Film Finance and Development Corporation and government representatives, Baruah said.
He added that a pragmatic and far-sighted policy could be worked out with suggestions from experts.
Baruah also expressed concern over alleged irregularities in the Prasar Bharatis distribution of commissioned programmes. The association had submitted memoranda to the director-general and chief executive officer of Prasar Bharati on this issue.
