*                Since the hoary past, there have been evidence where the
name of our State has been inscribed as 'Asam'. It is also believed that the
word has its origin in the Bodo word 'Ha-Sam'. However, in the Treaty of
Yandaboo signed in 1826 A.D., a certain British officer of the erstwhile
East India Company wrote off the State as 'Assam' as per his Anglo-Saxon
mode of pronunciation. Since then the State has been referred to as 'Assam'.
Over the years, different quarters have been emphasizing the need to remove
the second 'S' occuring in the mis-spelt 'Assam'. Again, in February 27,
2006, the present CM Tarun Gogoi declared the State to be named as 'Asom',
which is grossly wrong. The Natives of the State pronounce the single 'A' as
'O' / 'Aw'. If this is taken into consideration, the first alphabet 'A' in
the newly introduced 'Asom' has to be changed to 'O'  too, thereby making it
'OSOM'. There is no point of retaining the first 'A' and, replacing the
second 'A' with the alphabet 'O'. Even in the English language, the 'A' is
pronounced as 'O' / 'Aw' in words like 'call', 'ball', 'tall' etc. Again,
names like 'Tarun', 'Arun', 'Anil' etc are pronounced as 'Torun', 'Orun,
'Onil' etc in the Asamese language. The change that is required is the
deletion of the second 'S' and not induction of 'O' in the word 'Assam'.*
*                           Scientists always acknowledge their mistakes and
avoid being adament. The CM ought to rectify the name of the State but, stay
away from changing it to an incorrect form like 'Asom'. Even a genius like
Stephen Hawking declared his Big Bang theory to be incorrect. 'Pluto' has
been denounced from its position of a planet. It is hoped that the conscious
circle would rectify the name of the State of Assam as 'ASAM' and, stay away
from changing it to another incorrect form like the proposed 'Asom'. *
