As a High School  student,  I had  Sanskrit as one of my subjects. We were  
lucky to have a very  learned  teacher, namely,  the late Mr  Phanibhushan 
Bhattacharyya, Vyakarantirtha. He wrote a number of books in  Assamese and was  
known to have  compiled a Sanskrit-Assamese dictionary . He died long ago and I 
do not know  what happened to his dictionary. 
He used to quote from  original Sanskrit sources profusely and frequently 
whenever there was a chance  to do so. The ‘ghreetong pibet Charvaka’  was such 
a quote. As a school student what we were given to understand  was that 
Carvaka was not meant to be taken  
seriously. It was then  a matter of a little bit of  humour  for the 
religious scholars and the intelligentsia of the times; perhaps in the  final analysis 
it is so now.
