The following website discusses Carvaka in detail:

As a High School student, I had Sanskrit as one of my subjects. We were
lucky to have a very learned teacher, namely, the late Mr Phanibhushan
Bhattacharyya, Vyakarantirtha. He wrote a number of books in Assamese and was
known to have compiled a Sanskrit-Assamese dictionary . He died long ago and I
do not know what happened to his dictionary.
He used to quote from original Sanskrit sources profusely and frequently
whenever there was a chance to do so. The ‘ghreetong pibet Charvaka’ was such
a quote. As a school student what we were given to understand was that
Carvaka was not meant to be taken
seriously. It was then a matter of a little bit of humour for the
religious scholars and the intelligentsia of the times; perhaps in the final analysis
it is so now.
