My father says that when he had joined www.rimc.org India's top Military School -with no second or even tenth -- military service was a royal service with mostly games and parties and exercise. To some extent the 1962 war with China (he became a 2nd Lt in 1964 at age 19) and subsequent wars with Pakistan changed that and later the continuing insurgency. Now only those from military families or some who get inspired by others join -atleast as officers.

In a recent article in Harpers, Lewis Lapham pointed out that there is a longer term process at work here, noting that almost half of the 1956 graduating class from Princeton University went into the military (400 out of a total of 900 students), and form the class of 2004, there were only nine students who joined, out of a class of 1,100.
