On a slightly different note, we keep hearing that China has basically
overspent for the show (I think $70 B), and that it will run at a loss. In
the long run, it should however make it all up.
I agree with you about India though.
India has only a "wish list" and a lot of chest-thumping going around. But
when it actually comes to putting on a show, be it the Olympics, or even
winning some medals, it does not have the will.
There are a host of other problems....from lack of good infrastructure to
rampant, runaway corruption.
The only defense regarding China putting up a great show is that it is a
Communist country.
India, on the other hand has a system that seems to be rotting from the
inside out - hence nothing substantive gets done.
I was able to glimpse a few minutes of the Opening ceremony. The Indian
contingent looked pathetic.
