GUWAHATI, Aug 11 – Time has come for the youth of the region to realize the fact that a world of opportunities is opening up leading to more personal fulfillment, and with it has emerged the need for them to become more responsible, particularly towards the less privileged, stated the Archbishop of Guwahati, Thomas Menamparampil today.

In a function marking the inauguration of Don Bosco College of Engineering and Technology at Azara, on the outskirts of the city, the Archbishop said, "Money is not everything in life, and the quest for wealth should not endanger one's spiritual and cultural ethos."

Referring to the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi, he said that the Father of the Nation had demonstrated the strength of cultural and spiritual confidence, a force that has no parallel. Students and the youth could emulate such ideals and assert their own intelligence so that they could keep their identity and dignity intact, he added.

The youth should have faith in their abilities and look to the future with "tremendous confidence" if they want to excel in life, he said and hoped the new college would not just produce engineers but human beings who are socially and morally responsible.

Speaking on the occasion, Archbishop of Shillong, Dominic Jala was of the view that the college would help create people who can balance proprieties like economic growth and environmental security. He hoped that the new institution would serve the youth of a large part of the Northeast and thus create invaluable human resource.

Earlier in his inaugural address, noted educationist and Rector of the Don Bosco College of Engineering and Technology, Stephen Maveley described Don Bosco as an inspiring figure who meant different things to different people. In the Northeast, he was readily identified with service to the youth and society, he said and added "For many he is the hope for youngsters to emerge into the world equipped with knowledge and skills."

Maveley, who is also the Vice Chancellor designate of Don Bosco University, urged the students of the new college to become dependable human beings, who are motivated to reach out to those with lesser opportunities.

A detailed audio-visual presentation of the Don Bosco College of Engineering and Technology revealed that it would have four branches and would be supported by well qualified faculties and staff. He was confident that the college would not offer just impeccable engineering education but simultaneously impart cardinal values and principles.

In a brief interview with The Assam Tribune, the principal of the college, Prafulla Chandra Mahanta said that one of the strengths would be a rigorous academic discipline that was planned in meticulous details. He believed the institution would mould intellectually competent and morally upright students.
