Dear All

At present Assam is witnessing a spurt in the activities of certain organisations like AASU and AJYCP to flush out Bangladeshis. They have taken it upon themselves to identify such foreign nationals. They are also saying that it is national (Indian) question and so trying to build up support outside the state as well. The AGP and BJP have also joined the effort. Organisations like Viswa Hindu Parishad and Siv Sena (they have opened base in Assam as per news paper report)  have also lent their voices in support. In response, the AUDF, the Jamiat Ulema, the AAMSU, the Congress and some others have expressed the view that they would not tolerate harassing genuine Indian Muslim population in the name of foreign nationals, as has been meted out to about twenty odd youths of Mukalmua at Titabor. In short, the atmosphere is quite charged with apprehensions.

Realising that the situation is not like the one at the time of Assam Movement of thirty years ago, The Assam Jatiyotabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad has issued a statement to the effect (no other conclusion is possible) that Indian Nationals should not be irked being wrongly identified as foreign nationals at times, because, such mistaken identity may happen from time to time. Such victims should be ready to face some inconvenience in the greater national interest.

Instead of issuing such statements through the newspapers, why do not these outfit take their detractors (who are no less Indian than they are) and the people, who are likely to be affected due to their gaffe, into confidence at the grass-root level to help identify foreign nationals lurking in a given area? That would have been more sensible way of doing things than to leave room for misunderstandings and conflicts among the people in the name basically of religion.

The above-said statement issued would otherwise read like Israeli handouts where killing of civilians by their jets in occupied territories are blamed on mistaken identity or where Indian army kills youths in Assam for similar reasons. Is it co-incidence that India is being groomed as a 'cop on the beat' like Israel in this region and there is a simultaneous effort on the various quarters to cleanse this country of 'Islamic fundamentalism and religious zealotry' the catch phrases of Uncle Sam and his friends?
