Foundation of Kokrajhar engineering college laid
GUWAHATI, Aug 16 – Education can induce change in society and on the economic front. Sans education no progress is possible, said Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at the foundation stone laying ceremony of BB Engineering College at Chandrapara in Kokrajhar today, informs an official press release. Asserting that the State Government has given much emphasis on education all along, Gogoi said that education acts as a catalyst in bringing about a change in the mindset of the people and ushers in qualitative change in society.
“Our Government has been trying to induce qualitative change in education so that our boys and girls can compete with other States and contribute their mite towards nation-building.”
He said the engineering college in Kokrahjar, the third in the State to come up, after Guwahati and Jorhat would not only bring about a sea change in technical education in Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) area but entire Lower Assam. “We have been giving priority to the backward areas in terms of education, health, connectivity so that people of these areas too enjoy the fruits of development and catch up with the people living in towns and cities.”
Gogoi said that the Congress-BPF alliance Government which has completed over two years in office would continue to work with renewed zeal and vigour towards accelerating the pace of development not only in the BTAD areas but also in other parts of the State.
The Chief Minister spelt out the plans on the anvil to set up a full-fledged university, a science museum and planetarium in Kokrajhar.
Speaking on the occasion, BTC chief, Hagrama Mohilary, said that the the decision to set up an Engineering College, a separate university and a science museum and planetarium in the next few years would change the face of Kokrajhar in terms of development.
The BTC chief exhorted the need to maintain peace and unity among all the communities in BTAD areas to hasten the process of development.
Terming the occasion as a red-letter day, Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a long felt demand has been fulfilled with today’s foundation stone laying ceremony of BB Engineering College. “There has been no technical institution in the whole of Lower Assam for more than 50 years. The coming up of the engineering college would be a boon for not only BTAD but also the entire lower Assam.”
Others present included parliamentary secretary, Parameswar Brahma, MP, SK Bwismwthiari, principal secretary, Higher Education, HM Caire, President, Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Deputy Speaker, BTC and other Executive Members of BTC.
Earlier, executive member, Health, BTC, Emanuel Mushahary delivered the welcome address. Agriculture minister, Pramila Rani Brahma offered the vote of thanks.
The Chief Minister also took part in the open session of the golden jubilee celebrations of Kokrajhar Govt. College. In his address, he called upon the educationists to chart out new syllabi in tune with the times that could open vistas of employment opportunities for the boys and girls of the State. “Education cannot be delinked from jobs. Vocational and skill oriented courses are the need of the hour to absorb the huge manpower towards nation building,” said Gogoi.
Gogoi, while lauding the achievements of the college on the academic and other fronts, said his Government would look into the demands of the college and would try to address the problems at the earliest.
