AICTE sponsored  NATIONAL SEMINAR at SHILLONG ENGINEERING and MANAGEMENT COLLEGE, JORABAT ; on

“Future Perspective of Technical Education in NE Region”(on 20 th and 21 st  January, 2009).

Background: Present day education scenario is to create Technical knowledge. The Thech.  Edn.  in NER is far behind the national mark in quality, quantity and emerging areas of courses, in spite of having about 28 institutions/universities offering higher technical education in NER and the national thinking of super specialist universities education.  The lack of industries and private investors in technical education is a great drawback. Result- a mass exodus of good quality students to outside this region causing a great hardship to the economically poor people (specially, SC/ST and minority community) and  a dwarf  academic environment in the NER. The problems of the NER are different from the ‘mainland’ and hence needs a special policy to facilitate the academic growth.
The Shillong Eng & Mngt College is the first private engineering College established in the entire NER and it is the first private engineering college to organize a seminar on development of Technical education in NER with the OBJECTIVES of Technical Sessions:

1.    “Problems and Remedy for Future Perspective Tech education in NER”. To discuss the problems, to suggest necessary measures and to draw a road map for development of technical education in NER in future to compete with national level on one hand and the global academic scenario (specially with  South East Asians countries after the Center’s ‘Look East’ policy)on the other.

2.     “Autonomy to Institutions” in the NER in the line of knowledge Commission Report: Analysis of requirements and benefits.

3.    “Inter-twinning  of Institutions” -(a) between institutions & (b) between industries and institutions for the purpose of  resource sharing.
