How Many U.S. Jobs Are 'Offshorable'?
http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/6012.html
Harvard Business School students were asked to recreate a study assessing the potential "offshorability" of more than 800 occupations in the United States. Their findings: It might be a larger number than we thought.

Summing Up: How Much Can You Ask of Your Customers?
http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/6051.html
Is customer volunteerism combined with "ownership" a double-edged sword? It's seems okay to involve customers in providing ideas for new products and processes. But beware the downside of poorly thought-out strategies to encourage customer volunteerism and "ownership." Those were messages in the very thoughtful responses to this past month's column, says HBS professor Jim Heskett. (Next forum begins December 5.)

Working Paper: The Sciences of Design—Observations on an Emerging Field

Download the paper. Design sciences is a movement that affects not only the information systems discipline but also several allied disciplines, which must also contribute to its definition and participation. HBS professor Carliss Y. Baldwin and colleagues summarize and synthesize the positions, reflections, opportunities, and challenges expressed at the first doctoral consortium to explore the topic.

Working Paper: Spanning the Institutional Abyss—The Intergovernmental Network and the Governance of Foreign Direct Investment
http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/6049.html
Download the paper. Economic globalization presents severe governance challenges. HBS professor Juan Alcacer and Paul Ingram applied a network methodology to show how one type of organization, the intergovernmental organization, facilitates the cross-border investments of another type, the multinational corporation. The results help to explain which countries attract FDI, and from which senders. Results also point to an emerging rivalry between states and organizations as sources of governance in the global economy.
