Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Dec 6 – Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday emphasized the need for optimum utilization of human resource to accelerate the pace of development in the State rocked by multiple problems. Formally inaugurating the State’s first private university, the Don Bosco University, at a function held at the Don Bosco School auditorium, Gogoi said that in the scenario of hatred, insurgency and unemployment, it was necessary to revolutionize the education sector so that the State is propelled towards progress and prosperity.
Gogoi said that education that met the challenges thrown open by globalization could address the problems that have been plaguing the State. He further added that apart from making the young generation competent to face a changing world, education should make them better human beings committed for the development of the society with ideals of love and peace.
Noted educationist Prof K Sudha Rao, former VC of Karnataka State Open University who delivered the key note address, said that the nation building process will gather speed if the younger population of the country, more than any other age group, is properly trained and groomed. “In this process much is expected from the education sector and much more from the universities that are being opened now,” observed Rao.
Rao while lauding the initiative of opening a private university said that it was a sign of prosperity for the coming years to the North East States and Assam in particular.
“New universities are expected to open up new vistas of knowledge and dimension of creativity to make every individual’s life more meaningful and richer in depth and content,” said Rao, mentioning that human resource development was a catalyst for economic growth and national development.
The university, which already has an engineering college under it, would be using the infrastructure already available with the Don Bosco Society at Azara, Kharghuli and Maligaon, while additional facilities will be built up at the permanent campus at Tepesia.
Speaking on the occasion, Chancellor designate Father Joe Almeida described the moment as historical and asserted that the new university was conceptualized to respond to the growing needs of the region, afflicted by myriad problems. He said that unemployment was a major problem in the region and the university will address the problem. He also assured that the university will strive to create new generation of leaders with a vision and commitment towards society.
Education minister Gautam Bora who was present on the occasion, said that the new university was another milestone for the State and promised all support to the institution.
