US-based Assamese reaching out to underprivileged kids
By Kabita Duarah
GUWAHATI, June 18 – A small step in the form of a school for underprivileged tribal children in a backward place has of late transformed into a giant stride leading to the establishment of a link between the non-resident Assamese and their native place.

Parijat Academy, the small beginning located at Pamohi near Deepor Beel, has inched into the heart of the Assamese community residing in the US. Several members of the nonresident Assamese community have evinced keen interest to be a part of the efforts of Parijat Academy, which has been providing free education to the tribal children of Gorchuk area.

Joining hands with the authorities of Parijat Academy to change the lives of these children, whose parents are either marginal farmers, daily wage earners or eaking out a living by doing various other odd jobs, the Sarangapani family from Texas has initiated a library project at Parijat Academy in fond memory of their son.

They have appealed to their counterparts in the US to come forward and help the underprivileged children.

This Nitin Bezbaruah Sarangapani Library, which also has electronic books to retain the curiosity and interest of the very young, will be formally inaugurated on June 19. “I hope this project would open a small window to the world for the less privileged but very much well deserved children of the society,” Alpana Sarangapani told The Assam Tribune.

Alpana Sarangapani and Ram Sarangapani have requested the non-resident Assamese to help Parijat Academy whenever they visit the State.

Apart from the reading materials, the library will also have puzzles, number blocks and other playing materials supplied from the US.
