Working Paper: Secrets of the Academy—The Drivers of University Endowment Success
http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/6017.html
Download the paper. University endowments are important and interesting institutions both in the investing community and society at large. They play a role in maintaining the academic excellence of many universities that rely heavily on income from their endowments. In contrast, poor finances can undermine a school's ability to provide academic services altogether. Endowments have also received much attention recently for their superior investment returns compared with other institutional investors. In this study, HBS professor Josh Lerner and colleagues document the trends in college and university endowment returns and investments in the United States between 1992 and 2005.

Working Paper: The Internalization of Advertising Services: An Inter-Industry Analysis

Download the paper. When are advertisers more likely to establish and maintain their own in-house agencies? Despite occasional indications to the contrary, such self-sufficiency has long been viewed by industry observers and scholars as more the exception than the rule in the U.S. advertising and marketing services business. With the background that vertical integration in this industry is a neglected domain of research, analysis by HBS professor emeritus Alvin J. Silk and colleagues suggests that while most large U.S. advertisers rely primarily on independent agencies for advertising services, many other advertisers operate in-house advertising units.
What Do You Think? Is Case Method Instruction Due for an Overhaul?
http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/6001.html
The case method of teaching business management has come under criticism on a number of fronts as educators rethink how to incorporate new teaching tools and methods made available by technology. Professor Jim Heskett asks: Is too much emphasis being placed on cases as opposed to other forms of instruction in training decision makers? What application do cases have in preparing leaders versus managers? Is case method instruction due for an overhaul? What do YOU think?
