They propose to study a variety of human groups in a complex geographic,
ethnological, and linguistic situation: how they form, how they are defined
and identified by themselves and by others, how and why they merge and
separate. They have chosen a region which has been remarkable for the
mixture and the confrontation of different populations throughout its
recorded history and which remains so today: North-East India or Greater
Assam.
